Do I Qualify for a Experienced Driver Discount?

There are relatively few requirements for qualifying for a experienced driver discount. In general, you qualify for a experienced driver course if all of the following apply:
- You are 50 years of age or older (55 in some cases)
- You have confirmed with your auto insurance company that they provide a premium rate reduction for taking an approved Experienced Driver (Driver Improvement) Course. Please note that California law allows insurance companies to determine the discount percentage, but it typically ranges from 5% up to 15%. After you successfully complete Experienced Driver course, you must submit your certificate of completion to your insurance company to activate the discount.
- You have a good driving record. Insurance companies can refuse to give you the experienced driver discount if you have a poor driving record.
If you are at least 50 years of age and are interested in receiving a experienced driver discount, it is best to contact your insurance company prior to taking the course to determine:
- if your insurance company offers an insurance premium discount for taking a experienced driver course.
- if you are eligible to receive the discount (your driving record is good enough to qualify).
- the discount percentage and total discount you would receive on your auto insurance premium.
COURSE INFORMATION
California law requires that auto insurance companies give a premium rate discount to drivers age 50 and older who successfully complete a Experienced Driver Course.

California law allows insurance companies to determine the discount percentage, but it typically ranges from 5% up to 15%.
California law requires that insurance companies give a discount to drivers age 50 and older who successfully complete a Experienced Driver Course. There are relatively few requirements for qualifying for a experienced driver discount. In general, you qualify for a experienced driver course if all of the following apply:
- ✔ You are 50 years of age or older
- ✔ You have confirmed with your auto insurance company that they provide a premium rate reduction for taking an approved Experienced Driver (Driver Improvement) Course.
- ✔ you have a good driving record. Insurance companies can refuse to give you the experienced driver discount if you have a poor driving record.
Initial Course - You should take the Initial Experienced Driver Course if:
- ✔ You have never taken a Experienced Driver course before; or
- ✔ It has been over four (4) years since the completion date of your initial course.
Renewal Course - You should take the Renewal Experienced Driver Course if:
- ✔ You have previously taken a Experienced Driver course; and
- ✔ It has been less than four (4) years since the completion date of your initial course.
The initial course is designed to take 400 minutes (6 hours and 40 minutes) and the renewal course is designed to take 240 minutes (4 hours).
A completion certificate for the initial course is valid for an insurance discount for three years from the date of completion. The certificate may be renewed by successfully completing a renewal experienced driver improvement course within one year of the expiration of the certificate (within four years of the completion date on the certificate.) A completion certificate for the renewal course is valid for an additional three year insurance discount from the date of completion.
After you successfully complete Experienced Driver course, we will mail out your certificate of completion which must be submitted to your insurance company to activate the discount.
No. You may take the course at your own pace and in increments if you would like. Anytime you wish to end your session, simply log out and all of your progress will be saved. When you log back into the course, you can continue the course where you last left off.
Yes! Our online exam consists of multiple-choice and true/false questions and can be taken online after you complete all of the course material.
If you fail the final exam, you can take it as many times as you need to pass at no additional charge. However, most people pass the exam the first time.
We will mail your certificate of completion via USPS mail the very next day after you pass your final exam. However, if you need your certificate sooner, we also offer USPS Priority Mail, FedEx Next Day and FedEx 2nd Day service.
